Slovenian Member of the European Parliament Alojz Peterle on April 18 marked the end of the plenary session by playing the harmonica in the chamber and calling for the reconstruction of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral, three days after it was devastated by a fire.
A member of the Christian Democrat European People's Party like EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Peterle received a standing ovation after playing the informal anthem of the European Union, an instrumental rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ode to Joy, shortly before a voting session - the last of this legislature.
Peterle, 70, a former Slovenian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, thanked his colleagues for 'five years of unity and diversity' and added it was the EU Parliament's responsibility to 'keep Europe together.'
