In 2019 i crewed on a sailing vessel on a trip to Greenland. We departed from Bay Bulls in Newfoundland (the home of the owner) and sailed to direct to Qaquotoq in Southern Greenland from Bay de Verde in 4 days. From there we day sailed up the south west coast as far as Nuuk, retuning via the Labrador coast.
This is the best preserved Norse ruin in Greenland and is also the location of the last written record of the Greenlandic Norse, a wedding in September 1408. Modern scholars date the end of the Norse era in Greenland at about 1450, making it the longest European settlement in the New World at about 450+ years of continuous settlement. In contrast, The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock 0nly 401 years ago in 1620.
