The Volkswagen ID.4 is an all-electric compact crossover available in rear-motor/rear-wheel-drive form (201 hp/228 lb-ft) with a range of 260 miles. It is also offered as an all-wheel-drive version with front and rear motors (295 hp) that gets a total 250-mile range.
The ID.4’s 82-kWh battery mounts low under the floorboards toward the rear of the car in the RWD version and adds another motor up front in the AWD version. Charging times at a DC fast-charging station with 125 kW capability can get the ID.4 from 5 to 80-percent range in about 40 minutes.
Pricing on the ID.4 starts at $39,995, not including federal or state tax incentives. That base model gets your Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 19-inch wheels, heated seats, and steering wheel, navigation, and wireless charging.
The $4,500 Statement Package adds leatherette seats, a power tailgate, and 12-way power front seats. If you upgrade further to the Gradient Package for another $1500 you can get 20-inch alloy wheels and 2-tone exterior paint. Add the AWD and you’re looking at closer to $43,700.
Competitors include the Tesla Model Y, Kia Niro EV, or even the Ford Mustang Mach-E. With its accessible pricing, modern tech and solid range, the ID.4 from VW makes a very compelling argument for people to start looking in an electrified direction.
