Covering An Total Surface Area Of 3,86,400 Square Kilometres, The Caspian Sea, Is The World's Largest Inland Water Body.
Situated At The Crossroads Of Asian And European Continent, Caspian Sea Has A Length Of Approximately 1,200 Kilometres From North To South, With An Average Width Of 320 Km. It Has A Vast Coastline Spanning 7,000 Kilometres ,and Is Bordered By 5 Countries,That Are Russia, Kazakhstan,Turkmenistan ,Iran And Azerbaijan. It Has An Average Depth Of 211 Meters And A Maximum Depth Of Over 1 Kilometers.
The Drainage Basin Of The Sea Covers Some 3,625,000 Square Kilometers, And Has An Average Elevation Of 28 M Below The Mean Sea Level. With A Total Water Volume Of 78,200 Cubic Kilometer,The Caspian Contains About One-third Of Earth’s Inland Surface Water. Caspian Sea Contains Nearly 3.5 Times As Much Water, By Volume, As All Five Of North America's Great Lakes Combined.

Whether The Caspian Sea Is A Sea Or Lake Is A Matter Of Our Perspective. Caspian Sea Water Has The Salinity Level Of That A Sea But Lacks A Connection To The World Ocean. A Lake Is A Body Of Water That Does Not Feed Into An Ocean And Is Generally Landlocked On Most Of Its Boundaries. Caspian Sea Can Be Termed As A Lake As It Is Not Connected To The Any Ocean And Is Landlocked.
A Sea Is Termed As A Large Body Of Water In Surface Area And Depth, But Not As Large As An Ocean. Sea Is Generally Defined As A Portion Of The Ocean. We Know That The Caspian Sea Covers A Lot Of Surface Area. It Is The Same Size As Of Japan Or 1.6 Times As Big As United Kingdom. So It Basically Depends On You, Whether You Want To Call Caspian Sea, A Sea Or A Lake.
The Caspian Sea, Like The Aral Sea, Black Sea, And Lake Urmia, Was A Part Of The Ancient Paratethys Sea. It Got Landlocked 5.5 Million Years Ago As A Result Of Tectonic Uplift And Sea-level Fall. Hence, The Seafloor Of The Caspian Sea Is Composed Of Oceanic Basalt And Not Continental Granite.
More Than 130 Rivers Flow Into The Caspian Sea,the Primary Tributary Is The Volga River In The North, Which Provides About 80 Percent Of The Total Water Inflow . Other Significant Rivers Include Amu Darya, Kura, And Ural Rivers.
The Largest Lagoon In The World Is A Part Of Caspian Sea .
The Kara-bogaz Gol Is Located On The Lake’s Eastern Coast. With A Surface Area Of 18,000 Km2, It Is The Largest Lagoon In The World. It Is Separated From The Caspian Sea By Sand Bars.
