Rimrock Draw Rockshelter in southeastern Oregon is the location where stone tools and the teeth of an extinct camel and bison were discovered, providing evidence of human habitation in North America 18,250 years ago. This finding, yet to be published in a peer-reviewed study, suggests that Rimrock Draw is potentially thousands of years older than any other archaeological site in Oregon.
The discovery was made by archaeologists who have been excavating the site since 2011, under a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. Previous investigations revealed stone tools from the Paleo-Indian period, but the site’s geology indicated the presence of even older sediment layers.
