Morton's neuroma, also known as intermetatarsal neuroma, is a painful condition that affects the nerves in the foot, specifically the area between the third and fourth toes (although it can occur between other toes as well). It is not actually a true neuroma, but rather a thickening of the tissue surrounding one of the nerves leading to the toes.
The condition typically develops due to irritation, compression, or damage to the nerve, often resulting from repetitive stress or pressure on the forefoot. This can be caused by various factors, such as wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, engaging in activities that put excessive stress on the feet (such as running or jumping), or having certain foot deformities like bunions or hammertoes.
Morton's neuroma commonly presents with symptoms such as sharp or burning pain in the ball of the foot, tingling or numbness in the affected toes, and a sensation of having a small pebble or lump under the foot. The pain may worsen with walking, running, or wearing narrow shoes, and individuals may experience relief by removing their shoes and massaging the affected area.
Diagnosing Morton's neuroma usually involves a physical examination by a healthcare professional who will assess the area for tenderness, swelling, and the presence of a "Mulder's click" (a clicking sound that occurs when the affected area is squeezed). Additional diagnostic tools like X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI scans may be used to rule out other conditions and confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment for Morton's neuroma depends on the severity of symptoms. Initially, non-surgical approaches are usually recommended and may include wearing properly fitted shoes with a wide toe box, using orthotic devices or shoe inserts to alleviate pressure on the nerve, and avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain. Physical therapy exercises, corticosteroid injections, and medications for pain relief and inflammation reduction may also be prescribed.
In cases where conservative treatments do not provide sufficient relief, or if the condition worsens, surgical intervention may be considered. The specific surgical procedures vary but generally involve removing or releasing the affected nerve to alleviate the compression and relieve the associated pain.

Early intervention and proper management can help individuals with Morton's neuroma regain their foot comfort and resume their daily activities with reduced pain.
