Hi there! In this video I'll show you an important technique that you can use when you’re designing parts with bends.
Let's take a look at this U-shaped bracket. Suppose we want a certain distance between the legs of the U. For example, suppose we need a one-inch space between the bend legs. To begin let's draw the flat part. First click the rectangle button and draw a rectangle. Let's set the rectangle to 3 by 1 inch with a Z thickness of .062. Next, click the zoom-to-fit button to fit to the screen. Now let’s create our bend lines. Click the Line button and draw a straight line on the left edge of the rectangle. Let's set the Nudge value to 1 inch. And nudge the line right by clicking the right arrow button. Next change the line type to Bend. Now lets replicate the bend line by clicking the Repeat and Nudge Right buttons. The bend lines are now exactly one inch apart. Now choose Job, Model Bends. And click OK. This creates a side view of the bend. Let's measure the distance between the legs. Click the ruler. And draw a line between the legs. nYou can see the distance is not 1 inch. This is because of the effect of the bend radius and material distortion.
Now let's see how to adjust the bend so that the distance between the legs is nominally one inch.
First delete the ruler line. Select the bend model. Click the Rotate button a few times to rotate 90 degrees. Now we will drag the bend model onto the flat drawing, snapping to the left bend. Now we can see the difference between the bend lines and the bend model. To compensate for this small offset we will draw a rectangle between the inner bend model and the flat bend line, snapping to each line. Now delete the bend model. Next, we need to increase the distance between the bend lines by the width of the rectangle. Simply move the measurement rectangle to the other side of the bend line. And move the bend line to the other side of the rectangle. Now we can delete the guide rectangle. Note that the pair of bend lines are no longer centered on the outer rectangle because we moved only one line. To recenter, let's draw a diagonal line. Then select the 3 lines. And drag to the snap center of the outer rectangle. Now let's verify the result. Choose Job, Model Bends and click OK. Use the ruler to measure the distance between the legs. The distance is now one inch as desired.
Designing bent parts to meet desired dimensions after the bend occurs is easy in eMachineShop. Thanks for watching!
