The Dimasa are one of the old Kachari tribes and are part of the larger Kachari group. They mainly inhabit in the northern half of the Dima Hasao Area, an administrative district in the Indian state of Assam that encompasses the Jatinga valley's ravines and surrounding territory. The term 'Dimasa' is most likely derived from the phrase "children of the huge river," which refers to earstwhile on the seashore or on the bank of the big river. The Kacharis are thought to be one of India's first indigenous ethnic groupings. Kachari origins can be found in the Boro, Rabha, Sonowal, Thengal, Dimasa, Garo, Hajong, Deori, Sutiya, Tiwa or Lalung, Hojai, Kachari Barman, Trippra, Mech, Rukkini Barman of Hailakandi and Karimganj, and others.
The Dimasa Kachari are primarily located in Assam's present-day Dima Hasao District (formerly known as "North Cachar Hills"). They also have a significant presence in Assam's Cachar, Karbi Anglong, Nowgong, and Karimganj districts, as well as Nagaland's Dimapur region.
