Play Date” is a song that paints a picture of adult situations within childlike settings. It tells the story of Cry Baby feeling like she’s nothing more than a friend to someone who seems to care very little about her, even though they get together quite often.

She wishes she didn’t care about how little he communicates or how much she has to chase after him, but by the end of the track, she admits that she values their playdates and does care.

It’s one of the three featured tracks from the deluxe version of Melanie Martinez’s debut studio album, Cry Baby. This is the shortest released song overall, at only two minutes and fifty-nine seconds. According to Melanie, this song is difficult for her to perform live due to the fact that
she can’t hit all of the high notes. This song replaced the unreleased song “Half Hearted” as part of a last-minute change.

Along with “Teddy Bear” and “Cake”, these songs are not part of Cry Baby’s story, despite being on the deluxe version of the album. But, she still is the main character in them.
