Poland's parliament has backed a media reform bill that would strengthen a ban on non-European firms controlling Polish broadcasters.
Critics say the move is aimed at silencing private TV network TVN whose news channel TVN24 is often critical of the government.
US group Discovery would be forced to sell its majority stake in TVN which would then allow a state-owned company to take over the media company.
The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party says the law would stop hostile foreign players from controlling its broadcasters, in line with other European countries.
Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan reports.
