Following the Second World War, there was a prominent war crimes trial held at Nuremberg which sought to punish the remaining members of Hitler's government and the last ministers of the Nazi Party. A number of death sentences were handed out and these men including Wilhelm Keitel and Joachim von Ribbentrop were executed by the US executioner John C Woods. There were 7 men including Rudolf Hess and Albert Speer who were sentenced to time imprisonment, however there were 3 men who were acquitted from their charges.
Franz von Papen was the former Chancellor of Germany and he faced no prison time, as did Dr Hjalmar Schacht the former President of the Reichsbank. Hans Fritzsche a radio broadcaster was also acquitted of his charges, but there were two other men who escaped the hangman and Spandau as they were either too ill to stand trial or in the case of Robert Ley he died during imprisonment.
