Getting your pilot licence can be an overwhelming process. We've outlined everything you need to do, step-by-step to make it as simple as possible!

Step 1: Apply for your Aviation Reference Number (ARN)
An ARN is an Aviation Reference Number. It is similar to an account number or customer number and it should be quoted whenever you deal with CASA. It is your own unique identifier. If you hold a licence or permission you will find in most cases that the number on there is your ARN. To obtain an ARN, click here:

Step 2: Undergo your Aviation Medical
In order to undergo a flight test you need to have a CASA approved medical certificate.
· Class 1 (required for Commercial Pilot Licence)
You will be required to visit a DAME (Designated Aviation Medical Examiner) and a DAO (Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist) for your initial issue.
· Class 2 (required as a minimum for Private Pilot Licence)
You are only required to visit a DAME (Designated Aviation Medical Examiner)

You will need an ARN to book a CASA Medical. When making the appointment, advise the clinic that you want to book an initial Class 1 or 2 Aviation Medical.
A list of Aviation doctors can be found on the casa website and you will also be required to fill out your medical history prior to attending your appointment.

Step 3: Aviation Security ID Card (ASIC)
An ASIC shows that the holder has a current security check and permits them to access security controlled airports. ASICs are normally valid for up to 2 years.
· You will need to be enrolled in a pilot training program or employed in an aviation role to meet the operational requirement to hold an ASIC. Airways Aviation can supply a letter of enrolment for this purpose.
