Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian who was also an anti-Nazi dissident. As a Christian, he concluded that it was his duty to assassinate Hitler for the good of mankind. The consequences of his actions did not turn out the way he intended, but he is remembered for his courage in standing up for justice in a very dark time in history.
However, while his faith and courage are commendable, I'm reminded of the time Peter cut off the ear of a man who had come to arrest Jesus and take him away. Jesus put the ear back on the man and told Peter to put away his sword, for it was God's will that Jesus drink the cup the Father had given him.
Our ways are not God's ways, and it's important to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, which may not seem logical to us at the time. God said, "vengeance is mine." As His followers, we would do well to leave it up to Him to take care of those we disagree with and do us harm.
