Washington is among 41 U.S. states and Washington D.C. suing Meta for claims the company has harmed young people and is contributing to the youth mental health crisis by knowingly and deliberately designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to its platforms.
The lawsuit claims Meta routinely collects data on children under 13 without their parents' consent, in violation of federal law.
"I think this can fairly be described as one of the most robust, multi-state consumer protection efforts that our office has ever seen or been a part of," said Washington AG Bob Ferguson.
