Hi, and thank you for watching.
We can find various opinions about the GH6 and GH5 autofocus on the net.
Some people say the GH6 has much better AF than the GH5, some say the opposite.
In reality it is more complicated.
0:00 : AF speed
0:34 : AF accuracy and pulsing
1:05 : GH6 AF-C OFF
1:20 : GH6 60fps
Lens : Panasonic Leica 10-25mm at 25mm.
Settings : 4K 30fps, 10 bits, 1-area focus.
Summary :
- The G9II has very fast and accurate focus most of the time, some older lenses like the 45-175mm has some issue with accuracy though.
- The GH6 has a weird bug in 4K/C4K/5.7K 24 to 30fps when using AF-C, this bug makes the image out of focus and looking very soft.
But contrary to some reviewers said, the GH6 is not softer than the G9II, it's just because of this bad autofocus. In reality, the GH6 stops to search the focus to minimize pulsing. This is why the focus appears faster than the GH5.
I tested many lenses like the 10-25mm, 12-60mm(s), 25mm Pro, 45mm Pro, 45-175mm, 100-400mm. All these lenses show the same issue.
The only lens I own which works well at 24 to 30 fps in AF-C is the 25mm Panasonic Leica f1.4 II.
When using AF-S (pressing the AF button manually while recording) the AF is very accurate, even more than the G9II, but the focus pulses a bit. And this is not a solution for people who need continuous AF.
When using 60fps, the focus is more accurate than 30fps but pulse, exactly like the GH5.
- The GH5 is most of time very accuracte but often slower than the GH6, it pulses a lot as well.
