Honey has an incredibly long shelf life. Archeologists have found pots of honey in ancient Egyptian tombs that are over 3000 years old and still perfectly edible. Honey was used to sweeten and flavor a variety of beverages, including mead, a fermented honey wine. Honey itself was a symbolic significance in ancient Egyptian culture, representing sweetness, fertility and prosperity. It was even used to ward off demons.
They believed sweet items like honey would repel evil spirits while being attracted to bad smells. These practices were very common as evil spirits were blamed for many things, including illnesses.
