US helicopter manufacturer MD Helicopters (MDH) revealed on September 28, 2023, that it has completed a contract with the Nigerian government to supply 12 MD530F Cayuse Warrior reconnaissance/light attack helicopters.
The helicopters will strengthen the Nigerian Army Aviation. The unit was established to increase the mobility, responsiveness and effectiveness of ground forces during missions.
The contract includes an Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package, replacement parts, and training programs for pilots and maintenance crew. A simulator is also included in the agreement.
The first batch of MD530F is expected to be delivered to Nigeria in the last quarter of 2023.
One of the important features of the MD530F helicopter is its advanced weapons system. The helicopter can be equipped with a laser targeting system and a variety of weapons including machine guns and rockets.
This allows it to effectively attack ground and air targets while providing close air support to ground forces.
The helicopter's navigation and communications systems also ensure smooth coordination with other units. The cockpit is designed for maximum visibility, essential for reconnaissance missions.
In terms of security and durability, the MD530F is equipped with additional armor systems and electronic countermeasures systems to minimize its vulnerability to enemy threats.
The MD530F is also designed for easy maintenance and repair. Its modular architecture allows direct access to key components, reducing maintenance time and costs.
Apart from the MD530F Cayuse Warrior helicopter, the purchase of a Bell AH-1Z Viper attack helicopter is also on the agenda.
The US Department of State has previously approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Nigeria of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters and related equipment, estimated to be worth US$997 million in April 2022.
