The global steel industry contributes to eight per cent of global carbon emissions. Commercialising the production of green steel is one of the key priorities on the path to net zero. It's no surprise that one of the world's biggest iron ore producers, Rio Tinto, is investing heavily in this area. The company is opening a $214 million dollar pilot facility in Western Australia to trial so called BioIron to convert iron to metallic iron. Rio Tinto Iron Ore Chief Executive Simon Trott says the process replaces the traditional blast furnace approach that involves burning coal with biomass and microwave energy, potentially cutting carbon emissions by 95 per cent.
