At the NATO summit on Thursday, President Joe Biden made an awkward error by introducing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin,” a slip-up that has added to the scrutiny over his cognitive abilities.
The incident, where Biden confused Zelenskyy with the Russian leader who has led a brutal war against Ukraine for over two years, happened just before Biden was set to address reporters in Washington, D.C., in his first press conference since his challenging debate against former President Donald Trump in late June.
This mistake comes amidst growing calls from Democrats for Biden to step down as the party’s presidential nominee.
“And now I want to hand it over to the President of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination,” Biden stated at the NATO event in Washington, D.C. “Ladies and gentlemen — President Putin. President Putin,” Biden said, then quickly corrected himself.
“He’s gonna beat President Putin, President Zelenskyy,” Biden continued.
Zelenskyy handled the blunder with ease, joking, “I’m better.”
Biden responded, “You are a hell of a lot better.”
Biden has dealt with stuttering for many years. However, his recent debate performance with Trump, along with other verbal mistakes and moments of apparent confusion, have heightened concerns about the mental sharpness of the 81-year-old, who is the oldest sitting U.S. president in history.
