Why can we only see one side of the Moon? Alex Dainis explains with her DIY orrery, which is this week’s Museum of Science and Dictionary.com Science Word of the Week.
Through this orrery demonstration, you will see that the Moon isn't just sitting still up there - it's actually spinning on its own axis while also orbiting around the Earth. It takes the same amount of time for the Moon to complete one full rotation as it does to complete one full orbit around the Earth. So, as it spins, we're always seeing the same side facing us! It's like the Moon has a favorite face, and it wants to show it off to us all the time! Pretty cool, huh?
