Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his heartfelt condolences to his dear friend "Abe San", late Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. In a tweet, PM Modi on Monday night shared details of his Tokyo visit. He further said that he would be paying last respects to Abe, who he remembered as “a dear friend and a great champion of India-Japan friendship”.

Before attending the funeral, Modi also met Japanese PM Fumio Kishida. Modi said Abe had taken India and Japan relations to new heights and expanded them into many other areas. PM Modi recalled that when he visited Japan last time, he had a long conversation with Abe. "India is missing Shinzo Abe," he added. Shinzo Abe was assassinated on July 8 when he was delivering a speech for an election campaign. "I am confident that under your leadership, India-Japan relations will deepen further and achieve greater heights," Modi told Fumio Kishida.

Kishida thanked Modi for attending the funeral and said that Modi, along with Abe, strengthened India-Japan ties. Expectedly, Tokyo witnessed heightened security with a large number of high-profile guests arriving for the state funeral. Abe's funeral will be the second state funeral for a former Japanese prime minister since World war 2. The funeral service will likely last for approximately one-and-a-half hours following which the national anthem of the country will be played.
