In his foreword, Ronald Pickvance writes "Writing in the catalogue devoted to Van Gogh's drawings that were published in 1990, the centenary of his death, I noticed with regret the absence of any sketchbooks from Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. That gap has now been majestically filled. Of unexpected provenance, the drawings can be traced to 1888." He is writing about an incredible 65 drawings unearthed and now superbly displayed in this enormous compendium volume, (clothbound) measuring 10" wide by just over 15" tall. The discovery adds a great deal to our comprehension of Van Gogh's choices of subjects and motifs and includes ten portraits with new 'faces' of his fellow artists Paul Gauguin and Eugène Boch and the café owner Monsieur Ginoux. Other characters are familiar from his paintings and there are also familiar views - three of his Yellow Houses in Arles, two boats and three of the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Some familiar motifs have been given a new twist like the rounded bush and weeping tree that are familiar in his work of 1888 and from Mont Majour with views afresh from different vantage points of the Provençal landscape. There are two versions of The Night Café and facsimile reproductions of some of his letters and notes, postcards and leather bound sketchbooks like the Ginoux Album and a map of the Cavalerie in Arles showing Place Lamartine. Among our favourites is the colour image of the Painter on the Road to Tarascon which was lost or destroyed during World War Two from a German museum. This artefact of incalculable historical and aesthetic value remained hidden for more than 120 years and here reappears as a revelation and an extraordinary treasure, all 65 drawings published in this volume for the first time. The Lost Sketchbook tells a story of two tumultuous years in the artist's life, just before his fatal stay in Auvers-sur-Oise and a new understanding of his most famous paintings such as the Yellow House, The Night Café and The Starry Night.
