This is just a demonstration recorded in July 2017 about scratching with Mixxx (this is v2.0.0), a free, open source and cross-platform DJ/DVS software. This software needs more improvements for this (and I need more practice, but that's another story), but I think it's enough for beginners. You can use any sound card -with phono inputs (or phono preamp and any sound card with standard line input) for standard turntables line out- and Serato, Traktor MK1 (unfortunately not MK2) or MixVibes timecoded vinyl control/s.
Bugs and suggestions can be published in the Mixxx forum (or in the developing website). Here you have some that were already published or that I published:
- Autogain: there was a problem with autogain with timecode vinyls while scratching, but a member of the developing team had already fixed it in the alpha version (I guess that this problem won't appear in v2.1) [ Ссылка ]
- Must have a little sound buffer size for sharp cuts (internal mode): the mixing engine was designed in a way that, although setting the crossfader to the sharpest, it will need, at least, the time of the buffer size to change from open to close or viceversa (making a ramp). Mini Innofader cuts in 3 ms more or less, so if you have a 23 ms buffer size, for example, the cuts will be always too soft. In this video I set it to 5.3 ms (with ASIO driver, of course). Low budget sound cards may have problems for this (but I'm not sure) [ Ссылка ]
- Fail timecode positioning with fast backspins: Mixxx can't maintain the needle position according with the track position if vinyl go so fast. So, Mixxx is not good for beat juggling at this moment. [ Ссылка ]
- Clipping in recordings with loud mixes: if the mix is too loud, there are awful clicks in the output wav file (this very one in the video had them, but I cleaned them up with Audition). It's already fixed -partially at least- but better to check the vu meter. [ Ссылка ]
And some minor bugs as well, like a little visual inestability in the LateNight skin (my favourite for scratching) [ Ссылка ].
But I hope that everything will be fixed by the community and this fantastic DJ software will be a better and powerful DVS/DJ software for free! :)
The beat ("Funky Magic") is a loop downloaded for free from studioscratches.com (I played it faster in the sample deck)
I used a Numark TT500 with the classic Shure M44-7, and a Traktor Z2 as soundcard and mixer in internal mode (mapped by myself with Mixxx' easy MIDI setup, capable in Windows and maybe Mac only at the moment for this model). The timecode vinyl is a MixVibes and the PC an i5 laptop with 8 GB RAM, SSD and Windows 7 64-bit (but as far as I know, it works fine with less)
