Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is the most commonly used form of FDA-approved quit smoking medications. NRT reduces withdrawal feelings by giving you a small amount of nicotine with none of the other dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes. The nicotine patch is one type of NRT. It can be used by itself every day to control withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke, or it may be used with nicotine gum or lozenges as needed for strong cravings.
