Inspired by other newly independent nations at the 1965 South Pacific Conference Papua New Guineans began to agitate for independence. Eight years later, Australia granted PNG self-government and Sir Michael Somare was elected the Territory’s first chief minister. Despite a desire for full independence many in PNG were worried about the speed with which Australia was pushing to end colonial rule. The issue came to a head in 1973 during a visit by Australia’s then Prime Minister Gough, and the ABC was there to report the developments.
