Your first story this week is two cool drone techs: the first one is a tethered system that allows for unlimited flight time. You might say: well yeah, that’s what tethered drones do, right?
Almost… in this case, European based company Atlas revealed its AtlasTETHERED system which not only provides power to the drone, but also provides 2-way communication, eliminating the need to a radio link, and also eliminating the possibility of being detected.
The second cool bit of tech is from Dufour Aerospace, a swiss-based EVTOL company that showed the maiden flight of its third prototype, the X2.2. Arizona-based Spright is set to be the launch customer for the Aero 2. The company committed to 40 units with an option for an additional 100.
The aircraft ism designed as an unmanned cargo transporter and can carry 88 lbs for 216 NM at a cruising speed of 92 kt. The company also plans on a much larger drone, the Aero 3, capable of carrying 1650 lbs of payload, or 8 passengers plus a pilot. We look forward to see what this company is gonna do!
Your second story this week is an update to the part 137 approval process.
If you aren’t familiar, part 137 covers agricultural spraying with aircraft and allows a farmer or contractor to carry hazmat to complete this spraying.
Previously, this process to be approved for part 137 ops took years to complete, but according to Arthur Erickson, CEO and co-founder of Hylio, the FAA made changes to Part 137 and the new process should take only one or two months now.
Changes to part 137 include a new subsection for drones specifically, meaning that farmers no longer need to apply under as crop-dusting airplanes and then request exemptions for things that don’t apply to them. Applicants will still need a part 107 certificate but this seems to be a shift in the right direction and will hopefully allow more agricultural operations!
Your last story this week is the DJI Air 3, which according to DroneXL may release as early as June 28th.
A few clues about the drone’s release and possibly a new controller have been leaked by DealsDrone including a box marked with a specific date and time, translating to the 29th and 8AM EDT.
Unfortunately there are few details on the actual specs of the Air 3 or the possibly new transmitter called the RC-N2.
Keep in mind, this is only a rumor and I have a hard time believing it will actually happen this quickly. There are still no concrete photos of this drone or any other leaks, which is unusual for a DJI launch.
