“Be yourself. Life is precious as it is. All the elements for your happiness are already here. There is no need to run, strive, search, or struggle. Just be.” Thich Nhat Hanh
In my earlier years as an employee, I found myself chasing after success and recognition at work. To make a lot of money even if it meant having less personal time, to be someone that’s of value to others, to be the best teacher in the department, to be considered as worthy or special or important by my superiors.
And in the midst of a non-stop chase after this illusion of success, my mental and physical health were deteriorating. I found myself rushing to work, coming home late, working while eating, attending weekend workshops at school, even dreaming of my job when I was asleep. I breathed and lived my job. I was unhappy, unbalanced, unstable, unwell.
My job was taking a huge chunk of my life, so I decided to let it go. I quit my job so I can start living my life.
I shaped and created my own reality, and I was done feeling like a victim.
So I took control of my life and the amount of time I have. From being always on the run and always striving to be the best, I adopted a slower, more intentional and more mindful way of life.
To wake each morning without rushing to work, to have more time to go inward, to savor each bite of my meal, to devote time to declutter and organize my possessions, to appreciate simple pleasures in life - the melodious chirping of birds, the rustling of the leaves, the changing colors of the sky… And to give more attention to my health.
I stopped searching for happiness outside of me and began discovering happiness within. It’s true that I need money to pay the bills and afford basic necessities, but I don’t have to kill myself in a job that promises a good paycheck while sucking the life out of me bit by bit. Life is much too precious and short for that.
Now working as an independent contractor with full control over my schedule, I am able to slow down. I still wake early not because I have to but because I want to. I create a routine that works for me, such as meditating first thing upon waking up, drinking a glass of water in the morning, making and savoring every bite of my breakfast, attending to my work and having time to exercise and enjoy a slow and leisurely walk.
I make enough for what I need, and I live comfortably and contentedly with what I have. This is also one of the reasons why I decided to move to a place where the cost of living is lower while at the same time being closer to nature, which I found to be nourishing to my soul. And by quitting my job and simplifying my life, I was able to work part time and live full-time.
