Join me on an immersive adventure into a Brooklyn no-man's land, where I dive deep into an unassuming bodega, untouched by social media, hidden amidst the city's bustling streets. As I uncover the handwritten menu, we experience the authentic flavors of Guatemala together, from the comfort of our screens.
After eyeing this bodega during my daily commute in the pre-pandemic times, I finally muster the courage to step inside and discover the culinary delights it offers. There's no Instagram page, no Yelp reviews to research – just essential community-fueling cuisine and plenty of charm.
Our journey begins with shecas and coronas, traditional Guatemalan breads, both with a surprising, yeasty flavor and a hint of sweetness. These breads are perfect for dunking into coffee - a habit we'll have to try at home. We then unpack the mystery of tamales de arroz and chuchitos, two delectable tamale variants wrapped in unique plant leaves. Each bite is a revelation, distinct from the Mexican tamales I grew up with but no less delicious.
The grand finale features the rare and uniquely Guatemalan tamalitos de chipilín, an herb-infused treat I had to go back for. Its dough-like texture and distinct saltiness left a lingering taste that I can't stop thinking about.
Come with me as I dive into this culinary journey, exploring the shared roots and subtle differences between Mexican and Guatemalan cuisines, feeling a profound connection to the ancient Mayan civilization that is part of both nations' heritage. Let's discover together the uncharted flavors of this off-the-grid Guatemalan bodega.
