Today I’m planting one of the most beautiful late Summer flowering shrubs, the Hibiscus Syriacus, otherwise known as the Rose of Sharon. This particular variety is called Hamabo and is a gorgeous soft pink colour with a darker pink middle. The Rose of Sharon differs from the tropical type of Hibiscus which has the huge dinner plate size flowers. The Rose of Sharon Hibiscus is very much hardier, does well in any soil, is drought tolerant, self-cleaning (no need for deadheading), blooms on new wood so you can prune in late Winter, likes full sun so needs at least 6 hours of sunlight to perform at its best. It’s an all round winner for any garden. In this video I also give you an update on my rose bush which I pruned back really hard at the end of June, and now about 5 weeks later the shrub is flowering for the second time this year and I believe it’s looking even better than it did the first time round. So absolutely well worth doing.
