RAF Brüggen was a Royal Air Force base operational from 1953 to 2001, situated near the village of Elmpt in the Niederkrüchten municipality, 43 kilometers west of Düsseldorf, close to the Dutch city of Roermond at the border.
Following the reunification of Germany, a decision was made to significantly reduce the RAF strength in Germany. The then-existing eight operational Panavia Tornado squadrons of RAF Germany were reduced to four. The 9th, 14th, 17th, and 31st Squadrons stationed at the base not only participated in the Gulf War but also conducted combat missions over Kosovo and former Yugoslavia, taking off directly from RAF Brüggen.
