Sight Singing Practice
This video is a sight singing exercise for singing tricky lyrics. The rhythm and melody is straightforward, but beware of the lyrics!!

The exercise is not challenging at all melodically, in fact it's very simple, and the rhythmic pattern is essentially the same throughout (4 x 1/8th notes). What is challenging however is the lyrics Emer uses with the rhythmic pattern, and where she puts that pattern in the bar!!
The whole point of this exercise is to appreciate how lyrics can feel different to sing, and also trip you up if they don't follow their regular speech pattern.
This exercise has a simple 4 x 1/8th note pattern, and it is put an 1/8th note later in every bar (though not on the last 1/8th note of the bar!), which when you look at the part seems fairly straight forward, but the lyrics Emer has used can catch you out.
The first verse has a phrase that has the stresses on the first and third word, 'I' and 'feel'. This phrase works well and follows a regular speech pattern when its placed on the beat.
The second verse has a phrase that has the stresses on the second syllable of 'believe' and on 'me'. This phrase works well and follows a regular speech pattern when its placed off the beat.
So this is where the problem lies, these two phrases are put in different parts of the bar, sometimes they sit comfortably, and sometimes they don't. The singers job is to allow the lyrics and the phrases to flow no matter where they sit in the bar.
Watch the full Bite-size #9 video to see Emer explain:
1. how to be aware of lyrics that don't follow their regular speech pattern
2. how to be aware that lyrics need to flow no matter where they are put in a bar
3. how to sing these rhythms, focusing on feel
The process Emer suggests you go through when looking at a piece of music is:
1. as always, start with your 'Routine For Reading' (clef, key signature, time signature, rhythm, melody, lyrics)
2. be aware that harmless looking phrases can trip you up
3. recognise when it's tricky lyrics that catch you out, this is the type of situation that can really throw you when you're sight singing, so be aware of it and don't let any slips faze you
4. remember to let these lyrics flow, and always be musical
Also think about working your way through each of the vocal lines, using this exercise to practice reading vocal lines that are on the same part.
