On October 16, 1956, Pan Am Flight 6, a Boeing 377 named "Clipper Sovereign of the Skies," departed Honolulu for San Fransisco and encountered failures of two of the four engines after passing the point of no return.
The flight crew had to make an emergency ditch landing in the Pacific Ocean (in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard below waiting to rescue). All passengers and crew survived, including the 30 year old Pan American World Airways Flight Engineer, Frank Garcia. The accident was the basis for the 1958 film Crash Landing.
Mr. Garcia continued to serve Pan Am until 1991, when the airline went out of business. Pan Am Museum Board Member Phillip Keene interviewed Mr. Garcia on November 10, 2017 for this video and he was honored by the Museum at the 2017 annual gala. Unfortunately, Mr. Garcia passed away in 2019 at the age of 94.
