I took these videos during my last buying trip to South India in 2021. I was delighted to visit again with my dear friend Varadaraj. He was one of the first artists I found when I started Lotus Sculpture. His family is like my family. As Lotus Sculpture has grown, Varadaraj has grown along with us. Now, he’s known as one of the best bronze artisans in South India and has 30 artists working with him.
Bronze statue casting through the fire method is an ancient and intricate process used to create exquisite sculptures. This technique, also known as the “lost-wax” or “cire perdue” process, dates back thousands of years and involves several detailed steps.
First, a model of the sculpture is created using wax, which is then coated in a heat-resistant material, often a clay or ceramic mixture. This coating forms a mold that encases the wax. The mold is then heated in a kiln or furnace, causing the wax to melt and drain out through a channel, leaving a cavity in its place.
Next, molten bronze is poured into the mold, filling the void left by the melted wax. The bronze is allowed to cool and solidify, taking on the intricate details of the original wax model. Once the bronze has cooled, the outer mold is carefully removed, revealing the solid bronze sculpture within.
Finally, the statue undergoes finishing touches, such as sanding, polishing, and applying patina to enhance the sculpture’s appearance and preserve its beauty. This ancient method of bronze statue casting in fire remains a cherished art form, producing stunning, one-of-a-kind masterpieces that stand the test of time.
