Oh boy, here are a few firsts on my channel!
Before I start with that. I actually wanted this description to be about something else. When I recorded my last video, that Defeated Sanity one, I remembered something about the memory issues I talked about earlier. Because I was in a very bad mental space when I played with Defeated Sanity last summer, I noticed those issues heavily, and that was the reason I even thought about talking this subject. But that will be the topic for another or hopefully the next video.
This video was also supposed to be about the band I play here, Vale Of Pnath. Because I have fond memories of me jamming their tunes in my late teens/early twenties. But then this issue came up. I really love this song (As you can see: I'm actually moving here) This was the first (metal) release I really liked after my 3 year long music break. I'm a sucker for black metal influences, even though I don't listen to "classic" black metal. But man, tremolo picked chords. That is theeee shit. So, what's the issue then? I do think that this song is not really suited for a playthrough. Because of that, I thought about spicing it up.
My first thought was editing it in the way of my "Der Weg Einer Freiheit" video. So black and white, nothing visible except the guitar. Actually pretty similair to the official video of "The Darkest Gate". (Tidbit: That video was the reason I edited that "DWEF" video that way.) But I also wanted to get it done today. Yeah, this is actually another 24 hour challenge. But I'll be writing about that later. There are a few spots that allow for some atmospheric improvisations, so why not include some slide guitar playing.
Now to the surprises:
Here are those firsts!
First video recorded on weekday/workday. First video that was not heavily rehearsed, but improvised. First video where I'm slightly drunk aaaaand first video with my slide playing, WHICH I'VE BEEN DOING FOR OVER 4 YEARS NOW!!!
My lovely subscribers, there are a few surprises that I still haven't showed yet. With that dynamic hybrid picking video and now that slide guitar playing, you're getting a good glimpse of my solo material. (If you now imagine the "The Last Of Us" soundtrack, you basically have it)
But credit where credit is due: The reason I started this was Tom "Fountainhead" Geldschlägers solos on Obscuras "Akroasis". I'm only trying to emulate a fretless guitar sound without actually having a fretless guitar (because I think that this has its own issues). So what did I do? I just ordered a batch of slides, each different in material, design and size. Then I tried which one was the the one that restricted my regular playing the least and thus I decided for the one you can see here. That was around 4 year ago. ACTUALLY, it started with tapped slided harmonics which are also featured here with the slide...and electronic music sound design!
I've never seen a single slide guitar video (except Opeth at Wacken) and I don't intend to. I know exactly what sound I'm after. I don't want to be influenced by other slide players or feel bad about not being good enough, compared to them. (Biggest impact on my playing: when I stopped looking at others or comparing myself, I made most progress!) That's why I also wear the slide on my middle finger. Allows me for most feeling for phrasing and doesn't restrict my playing as much as the other fingers (Remember: Christian Münzner of Obscura basically plays without his middle finger)
I could talk ages about slide playing, as this topic is in line with dynamic guitar playing (Spoiler: you can only play slide guitar with higher action, and you have to develop a feel for it, especially with hi-gain guitar.)
But I want to talk about this song and band a bit. I'm looking for a band. Vale Of Pnath don't have a 2nd guitar player. I like their music, especially their latest EP, a lot. I hit them up about it. Vance was nice enough to send me 2 tabs. (Next video will be Accursed, but without a slide). I would love to join them on the tour at the end of the year, but it doesn't look like it's possible. That's all about it for now.
So that was yesterday. That makes this song a 24 hour challenge again. The reason for it was that I don't like being occupied with those things too much. I'm not home this weekend (Hey Jens!) so the next possible date would be the weekend after that. That means my stupid mind is fed up with "Oh boy, you still have to get this cover done, better practice....". When my mind is in that mode, it doesn't allow for anything else. Boy, I can talk about that A LOT. And I will. For now: I want to get my music done, so covers have to take a step back. Thus this was done in 24 hours, with improvisations.
Yes, all slide parts were improvised today in a few runs. So the slide parts you hear in riffs are more or less planned, but the main slide parts are improvised for this take only.
Enjoy the video :)
