Piperacillin-Tazobactam
Piperacillin-Tazobactam is indicated for treating various bacterial infections.

Piperacillin-Tazobactam is indicated for:
• Intra-abdominal infections
• Skin infections
• Female pelvic infections
• Community-acquired pneumonia
• Nosocomial –hospital-induced pneumonia

How does Piperacillin-Tazobactam work?
Piperacillin inhibits the cell wall synthesis of susceptible bacteria. But bacteria may develop resistance by producing an enzyme called β-lactamase. Tazobactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor. So, the combination is effective against most of the bacteria with almost no chance of emergence of resistance.

Piperacillin-Tazobactam is available as injection
2.25 grams or 3.375 grams or 4.5 per vial is available
How to take Piperacillin-Tazobactam?
The usual daily dose for adults is 3.375 g every six hours.
For nosocomial pneumonia: Start at a dosage of 4.5 g every six hours plus an aminoglycoside-another antibiotic
For kids aged above 9 months: The dose is 100 mg piperacillin/12.5 mg tazobactam per kg/BW every 8 hours.
For kids aged 2 to 9 months of age: The dosage is 80 mg piperacillin/10 mg tazobactam per kg/BW every 8 hours.
What are the common SIDE EFFECTS?
Piperacillin-Tazobactam is generally safe. Some of the side effects include:
• General: Fever, headache
• Alimentary Tract - Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation
• Infections: Candidiasis
• Metabolic: Low glucose levels or hypoglycemia
• Musculoskeletal: Muscle pain, joint pain
• Psychiatric: Insomnia or lack of sleep
When Should Piperacillin-Tazobactam should not be taken if-
• Allergic to Piperacillin-Tazobactam
• Allergic to pencillins, cephalosporins, beta-lactamase inhibitors
What PRECAUTIONS need to be taken?
• Serious Allergic reactions can occur. Discontinue if a reaction occurs.
• Discontinue the medicine in case of severe, progressive skin rashes.
• Monitor patients for WBC counts regularly.
• Monitor patients for kidney function regularly.
• Users may also develop diarrhea.
Special instructions:
Caution should be exercised in patients with:
• Severe kidney problems
• Severe liver problems
• Pregnancy and lactation
• Kids aged less than 2 months
• Adults aged above 65 years
Can Piperacillin-Tazobactam INTERACT with other drugs?
Do not take Piperacillin-Tazobactam with:
• Aminoglycosides
• Probenecid
• Vancomycin
• Anticoagulants
• Vecuronium
• Methotrexate
