US soldiers and those serving with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan celebrated the New Year at the NATO base in Kabul on Saturday.
Soldiers were served a special dinner, including a New Year's cake, and enjoyed some light-hearted entertainment, such as singing and dancing.
Shawn Walsh, who is serving with ISAF, said he is disappointed to be away from his family but added that he is "serving a greater cause".
"I hope everybody back hope has a wonderful New Year's and we are going to be thinking about you here in Afghanistan while we protect your borders," Walsh said.
Christina Johnson, another ISAF soldier, said she was looking forward to 2012 when she would be back home with her family in the US to celebrate "the entire year and not just one night."
