HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) is a research program operated by the United States Air Force, the Navy, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It involves a complex of antennas and transmitter facilities located in #Gakona, #Alaska, that emit high-frequency #radio_waves into the Earth's upper #atmosphere.

The main purpose of HAARP is to conduct research on the #ionosphere, which is the layer of the Earth's atmosphere that extends from about 50 to 600 kilometers (31 to 372 miles) above the surface. By using the HAARP facility to #stimulate the ionosphere with high-frequency #radio_waves, #scientists can study the effects of the waves on the ionosphere, such as changes in electron #density and #temperature.

HAARP technology has been associated with various conspiracy theories and claims of #weather_modification, #mind_control, and even causing #earthquakes. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims, and the facility is primarily used for research purposes. The HAARP program was officially #shut_down in 2014, but the facility and its capabilities remain under the control of the #University_of_Alaska_Fairbanks.
