Does fruit actually skyrocket your glucose levels? And which specific fruits can do the most damage to your health?

1) A 1 cup serving of canned peaches can supply over 170 calories and nearly 40 grams of sugar, while that same serving size of fresh peaches gives you just 66 calories and under 15 grams of sugar. Whether or not syrup is added, canning involves a pasteurization process, during which certain vitamins will be broken down and lost. Canning can also slightly decrease the dietary fiber content of fruits.

2) While fresh cranberries contain about 4 to 6 grams of sugar per cup, with a modest 50 to 60 calories, a cup of dried sweetened cranberries really ups the ante. Certain packaged dried cranberry products can give you over 70 grams of sugar and nearly 340 calories!

3) A 100 gram serving of lychees, though quite small, supplies approximately 66 calories, with 15 grams of sugar. So this is one fruit which can send a huge amount of simple sugar into your blood stream without much of any fiber to slow your digestion. That’s why eating just one or two lychees could potentially skyrocket your glucose levels.

4) Raisins, like other dried fruits, pack highly-concentrated quantities of sugar into a tiny package. In fact, just ¼ of a cup of raisins contains 21 grams of sugar, and a whopping 29 grams of total carbs! That means if you were to eat a full cup of raisins, you’d be overloading your system with over 80 grams of sugar and nearly 120 grams of total carbs!

5) Many fruit juices can shock your system with a higher concentration of simple sugars than brand-name sodas. In fact, some packaged fruit juice drinks have been reported to contain over 65 grams of sugar per liter, while some popular soda brands top out at 60 grams of sugar per liter. But it isn’t so much the addition of sugar which can make fruit juice hazardous. Rather, it’s their lack of fiber which can make them detrimental to your health. When fruit juice is made, the most nutritious parts of the fruit are thrown out… that being the fiber and nutrient-rich skins.
