After a patient is intubated for surgery, you should always keep your intubating equipment immediately available! You never know if something might happen that requires emergency re-intubation, especially if the patient is prone, like in spine surgery.
I always keep a laryngoscope handy. Even though it might be dirty from the patient secretions and mucus, there still needs to be something immediately at hand.
I also keep my intubating stylet (or endotracheal tube stylet) at hand to make any re-intubation as easy as possible.
