Gorillaz is a musical and visual project founded in 1998 in the UK by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett . The project includes Gorillaz's own music and an overarching fictional universe depicting a " virtual band " of cartoon characters. The band has four animated members: 2D (lead vocals, keyboards and melodica), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar and drums), Noodle (guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Russel Hobbs(drums and percussion). Their fictional universe is explored through the band's website and music videos, as well as a number of other media, such as animated shorts. The music section is a collaboration between different artists, with only Albarn serving as the permanent musician
