The Expedition of the Thousand, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860, was a crucial campaign in the unification of Italy. Garibaldi, a nationalist and military leader, gathered around 1,000 volunteers, known as the Redshirts, to conquer the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in southern Italy. Beginning in May 1860, the expedition landed in Marsala, Sicily, where Garibaldi's forces quickly gained popular support. They defeated the larger, but less motivated, Bourbon army in a series of battles, including the significant victory at the Battle of Calatafimi. By September, Garibaldi had captured Naples, the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. His success significantly contributed to the unification of Italy, paving the way for the eventual proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 under King Victor Emmanuel II. Garibaldi's campaign remains a symbol of Italian nationalism and unity.
