Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, recently shrank after an unusually dry period, exposing areas of the lakebed and stranding fishing boats.
The lake, which lies in east China's Jiangxi Province, began shrinking drastically in early August. Experts attribute declining water levels to decreasing inflow from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
The hydrological station in Jiujiang city said that the water level was at 10.15 meters, approaching the extremely low 10-meter mark.
The lake entered a dry period on Sept. 19, which was 54 days earlier than that of the same period historically.
Large swathes of grassy land have emerged as the lakebed dries in Lushan city, and even a well-known rocky islet called Luoxingdui is now accessible by cars and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, fishing boats in the area have become stranded.
In Jiujiang city, a famous water highway that was submerged in June is once again visible.
If Poyang Lake's water level continues to drop, it could harm the local fishing industry and agriculture, as well as affect residential water supplies and the foraging of migrant birds in the winter.
