On Tuesday, October 20, Sheriff Margaret Mims and members of Susan G. Komen Central Valley will hold a press conference to discuss the 17th Annual Susan G. Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure®. The media is invited to Sheriff’s Headquarters, 2200 Fresno Street at 10 a.m.
The Komen Central Valley Race takes place Saturday, October 24 at Fresno State. The Race Expo/Registration is located at the Maple Mall at the Satellite Student Union. The 5K (3.1 mile) event takes off at Barstow and Woodrow. The men’s run starts at 7:30 a.m. and the women’s at 8 a.m. Awards for these runners will be distributed at 9 a.m. and it will be followed by a survivor recognition ceremony. The co-ed fitness walk takes place at 10:30 a.m. Lastly, at 11:30 a.m. is the Kids for the Cure Race. Organizers are expecting nearly 4,000 participants.
“Our goal and that of Sheriff Mims is to empower women to take personal action to find a medical home so they can access breast cancer screening locally. On September 26, we hosted the “Women Empowering Women Health Event” at Gaston Middle School in Fresno. Provided were no-cost clinical breast exams, mammograms and health education all in the same day," said Sharon Johnson, executive director of Komen Central Valley. “We save local lives through our upcoming fundraiser, Komen Central Valley Race. It supports programs like this and others that provide no-cost breast cancer screening and treatment. We are calling on the community to participate or donate to this event. We want local residents to be diagnosed earlier so that breast cancer can be treated effectively.”
75% of the funds raised by Komen’s Central Valley Affiliate stays local to support breast health education, financial assistance to breast cancer survivors and treatment programs. The remainder of the net proceeds, a minimum of 25%, will support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant program.
Those who are unable to attend this year’s Race can still make donations to Susan G. Komen Central Valley® by logging on to www.komencentralvalley.org.
