In light of the changing balance of power in Asia, NATO's pivot to the Indo-Pacific and the proliferation of US-led minilaterals, scant focus is directed at Russia’s stand on the Indo-Pacific discourse. Sitting at the gates of Northeast Asia, it is critical to observe how regional actors perceive Russia’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific and ascertain its objectives in the Indo-Pacific region. This merits further scrutiny, particularly in the context of Russia’s recently signed treaty with North Korea, strengthening ties with China, and outreach to ASEAN, which hold the possibility to shape the evolving geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific region significantly. In light of these changes, ORF is hosting a roundtable discussion to discuss Russia and the Indo-Pacific and what trends will likely emerge.
As the two theatres, Indo-Pacific and Eurasia, converge and the great power rivalry intensifies, it's important to ponder some critical questions. How does Russia view the Indo-Pacific region and its challenges? Is Russia a vital stakeholder in the Indo-Pacific region? How do major players in the Indo-Pacific perceive Russia’s role? and, How does Russia’s bonhomie with China and North Korea fit into its Indo-Pacific strategy?
