Portland Choir & Orchestra performs so many different styles of music from many different composers and eras. The orchestra and must be able to interpret those styles authentically and convincingly, whether it is traditional symphonic music, sacred music, Broadway show tunes or big-band jazz. We have done all of those and we’ll examine how the orchestra adapts to the various styles and genres of music that we perform.

We were delighted to be joined by Portland sports legend Bill Schonely narrating the powerful Aaron Copland composition Lincoln Portrait, where the music is punctuated by passages from some of Abraham Lincoln’s great speeches. 26:31 Oratorio. Some styles of music involve a vocal soloist singing with an orchestra and a choir. Examples include requiem, masses, and oratorios (like Handel’s Messiah). Today we examine the demands of performing with orchestra, choir and soloist with an oratorio-like composition called Jubilate Deo.

35:08 Big band jazz. We wrap up the discussion of yet another way that an orchestra needs to adapt to the needs of a performance. For one concert we did away with our symphony orchestra and replaced it with a big-band jazz orchestra. We examine a piece that was a huge hit for Glenn Miller in 1941: Song of the Volga Boatmen.
