WHY THIS AMERICAN LOVES PERFORMING AT THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE
Ever since 2006, when I brought my first show to the Ed Fringe, I have been trying to find my way back. The experience I had in 2006 has never left me and to this day when someone mentions the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a smile comes racing across my face and a slew of amazing memories come flooding back.
When I performed in 2006, there were about 1500 shows and now there are double that, around 3300 to be exact. The Fringe gets bigger and better every summer and no city anywhere can rival the offerings and diversity of the Edinburgh Fringe. There is unbelievable amount of magic and mayhem to the city. The city truly becomes this massive theatrical festival of performers, the enthusiasm and excitement is contagious.
As an American and a professional actor who works in Manhattan, Edinburgh has a theatrical excitement that is like no other. The festival takes over the whole city and there are hundreds and hundreds of shows. It truly is inspirational to see so many artists create theater and to be part of the whole energy. The experience will develop you as an artist and as a producer. You are given hundreds of examples of what can be done on little to no budget and with pure imagination.
There are shows to suit every taste and budget running from morning right through to the "wee small hours," the festival provides the perfect opportunity to discover what I feel is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. The city is transformed by the light of the moon as it bestows an otherworldly glow and glimmer upon Edinburgh's cobbled streets, baroque alleys, taverns and cellar bars - and cranks up the feeling that you could well be in the middle of a fairytale kingdom.
The city is compact and wonderfully walk-able, and during the festival each stroll to see the next show never fails to reveal something new. However, the real fun is the festival's diversity, and it is reflected in the countless eateries and taverns. Foodies can feast in Michelin starred restaurants, enjoy street food from everywhere - I go nuts over the kebabs (the best in the world ) and of course fish and chips served in newspaper with brown sauce. You can also gorge yourself on local delicacies that are perhaps more famous for their strangeness than for their actual deliciousness, like deep fried battered mars bars and of course, haggis. Personally, I like haggis.
And of course, who doesn't love the passion the country and city have over it’s whisky. I have definitely have had my share of visiting many of the country’s distilleries and sampling their product. Whisky's warm, intoxicating buzz is replicated in the city by the onset of night and promise of multiple pleasures - because in Edinburgh in August at nighttime everything seems possible, and given what you'll have seen in the day, very highly probable.
