Chaetodon lunula
Kīkākapu is the Hawaiian name for the raccoon butterflyfish.
Kīkākapu means “very prohibited.” It applies to most of the butterflyfish species. Hawaiians knew that this fish should not be harvested as they keep the coral healthy. Old Hawaiian law (kapu) forbade anyone from catching this fish unless it was used in a sacred ceremony.
