Aerial images show a wide crack in the ice days before a vast iceberg almost the size of Greater London broke away from the Antarctic ice shelf near a British research station. The iceberg measuring 1,270 square kilometres (490 square miles) has broken off from the 150-metre-thick Brunt Ice Shelf in a process called "calving", almost a decade after scientists of the British Antarctic Survey first detected growth of vast cracks in the shelf.
