Do this at your own risk. Incorrect wiring of the batteries can cause serious injuries.

This is a relatively easy project for people with simple soldering skills. I use two 4 volt, 75ma solar panels in parallel to run my 2 AA transistor radio. In an emergency, the radio can be powered by the sun alone. The 150ma solar energy can also be used to charge the two rechargeable batteries. Just drill a small hole at the side of the radio to pass the wire through and connect the negative wire to the negative terminal and positive to the positive battery terminal. I cut 2 small strips of tabbing wire to make soldering of the connections easier. Do not press your soldering iron on the battery terminal for too long or you can melt the plastic. A small diode (1N4002) is attached to the solar panels positive lead (with the silver band towards the battery) to prevent reverse charging. Secure the solar panels to the back of the radio with velcro and you are done. In this configuration, the radio will run on solar panel alone or together with the batteries. Just put the radio under the sun for a few hours to recharge. Total costs for the upgrade is less than 10 dollars including the eneloop batteries.
