Jonathan Pageau is a Canadian Orthodox Christian icon carver who has spent his life studying Scripture and Christian theology, as well as many of the great philosophers, and developed a profound understanding of how symbolic patterns in Scripture provide a kind of map, or worldview, for understanding how reality works. He is a critic of the scientific materialist worldview, which began to replace and dominate the symbolic spiritual worldview of ancient people after the Enlightenment. He talks about these differing worldviews as frames for viewing reality, like putting on a pair of glasses. We all need to view reality through a frame of beliefs, which for modern people is the scientific materialist frame. I think the goal is to be able to remove the materialist glasses and try to see the world instead through the symbolic lens. Christianity provides a powerful and transformative frame for seeing reality that has evolved and grown for millennia and condensed vast wisdom and knowledge into narrative form, if only we have the eyes to see...
